Salman Rushdie discusses his work, freedom of expression and celebrates 40 years since his trailblazing novel, Midnight's Children.

Salman Rushdie joins English PEN and The London Library to mark our anniversaries and celebrate 40 years since the publication of his trailblazing, bestselling, two-time Best of Booker-winning novel, Midnight's Children.

He’ll be in conversation with writer Nikita Lalwani to discuss the inspiration and genesis of his magical realist classic, an allegorical tale about Indian Independence, which sparked a revolution in post-colonial literature. He’ll speak about his remarkable body of work since, about literature, freedom of expression and the role The London Library and English PEN have played in his writing life.

Salman Rushdie is the author of fourteen novels including Midnight’s Children (for which he won the Booker Prize and the Best of the Booker), Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Ground Beneath Her Feet and Quichotte. A former president of PEN America and winner of the 2014 PEN Pinter Prize, Rushdie was knighted in 2007 for services to literature.

Nikita Lalwani is a novelist and screenwriter born in Rajasthan and raised in Wales. Her first book, Gifted, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and won the Desmond Elliott Prize. The Village won a Jerwood Fiction Uncovered award and her latest,You People, is optioned for television by World Productions. She is a writer on the upcoming television series ‘The Offenders’, created by Stephen Merchant and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

English PEN are marking their centenary with Common Currency, a 12-month celebration of freedom of expression, creative campaigning and the best literature the world has to offer, with a unique programme of events, residencies and workshops inspired by three key themes: free speech and democracy, languages and ideas, and celebrating women.
